Lead seal matrix

Medieval, probably 13th century.

Found in the 1970s during excavations of the archaeological section of the Winchester Museum on Victoria Road, Winchester, Hampshire.

The legend reads SIGILL WILEL (M) ISTAR, the seal of William Starr. Seal matrices were often purchased with the central drawing in place, and the legend was added at the time of purchase. The crescent moon may have been the closest matching drawing to the Stahr surname. Unfortunately, no other information about this man has survived from history, as his name does not appear as a property owner on Victoria Road, nor in the list of personal names known from medieval times in Winchester.
