Round Box Brooch

Women on the Scandinavian island of Gotland wore casket brooches to secure scarves at the collarbones; the brooches served as a container for storing small items. This specimen is decorated with tiny animals that inhabit the interlacing patterns on the top and sides. Viking art typically eschews figurative decoration in favor of lively patterns based on stylized animals.
