Rook or Pawn Chess Piece

12th century

Armed and ready for battle, the standing warrior appears in full robes and a long cloak. He slumps his shoulders slightly, as if under the weight of his armor, but he has an open, almost smiling face.

This figure is made of ivory, and the details are very clearly drawn, which undoubtedly speaks to the fine craftsmanship of the maker.

This piece is on display at The Met Cloisters in Gallery 10.
