Ornament

ca. 800 B.C.

Irish

Although such items are conventionally called "dress clasps" and "sleeve clasps," their exact purpose is unknown. It has been suggested that the smaller "sleeve clasp" worked similarly to modern cufflinks: discs were pulled through slits in the clothing. The "dress clasp" may have been attached with loops sewn to the garment.
