Ribbon Torc

This exquisite Celtic torc, dating from 500 B.C. to A.D. 400, is a remarkable example of ancient craftsmanship. Silver was a rare and highly valued commodity during the Iron Age in Ireland, making this discovery all the more significant.

The torc is constructed from a flat strip of silver that has been meticulously worked into a series of soft coils. What distinguishes this torc is the fine herringbone pattern that adorns both sides of the silver strip. This intricate pattern showcases the skill and artistry of the ancient Celtic artisans who crafted it.

This torc is part of a collection that includes five others made of silver, emphasizing the importance of these artifacts as valuable and treasured items during their time. The torc would have been worn around the neck as a necklace or bracelet, serving both as a piece of jewelry and potentially as a symbol of status or prestige.

Today, this Celtic torc can be admired by visitors at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue, where it is on display in Gallery 301. It offers a tangible connection to the past, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of ancient Celtic culture.
