The old town of Malmö Gamla Staden consists mainly of two different parts: the Gamla Väster district with many historic buildings in the west and the eastern part, which was renovated during urban renewal work in the 1960s.

The main squares of Stortorget and Gustav Adolf Torg are connected by Södergatan Street, Malmö shopping street. In addition to a variety of shops, boutiques and department stores, there are two shopping centres in the old town.

The largest square in Malmö is the Storget, built in 1540. On its eastern side is Malmö's Old Town Hall, built in 1544-1547. In the centre of the square there is a large equestrian statue of King Charles X Gustav. Lilla Torg is framed by beautiful old buildings and is only a few steps away from Stortorget.

The Tunneln complex in Adelsgatan is the oldest surviving building in Malmö and is located about 100 meters north of Stortorget. The cross vaulted cellars of the building date from the late 13th century. A few hundred metres to the east you will find the oldest half-timbered house in Malmö, Thottska huset, which was built in 1558. The neighbouring Diden huset was built in 1620.

The most impressive medieval building in Gamla Staden is the men's house Kocksa. This palace was built in 1522-1524 by the mighty master of the Danish mint and later Mayor of Malmo Jorgen Kock. The complex consists of three buildings and is located at the northwest corner of Stortorget.

Gustav Adolf Torg is located in the southern part of the old town. It is the second largest square in Malmö and was named after King Gustav IV Adolf, who lived in Malmö for several months in 1806/07. During this time the city temporarily became the capital of Sweden. Just a few hundred metres away is the old Malmö Cemetery, on the edge of the sprawling Kungsparken, which leads you to Malmöhus Slott.
