A remarkable piece of jewelry that draws inspiration from a terminal found in Eketorp, Sweden, on a Ring-shaped Brooch. This fragment is regarded as one of the finest surviving works from the Viking era, a testament to both artistic and technical excellence.
The silver sphere, though slightly dented with the passage of time, was originally hollow cast, with its surface adorned with niello, following the early Viking style known as Jellinge/Mammen. The design showcases raised, twisted gold wire, forming a quatrefoil ring-knot pattern on a raised, circular gold panel. Additionally, two adjacent triangular gold panels are embellished with studs, with one of them featuring a medallion adorned with serpentine tendrils.
This terminal from Eketorp shares typological and aesthetic similarities with a brooch terminal and pinhead discovered in a significant Viking silver hoard at Eketorp, Sweden, in 1950 and 1955. These artifacts are now on display at the regional Örebro Lans Museum, located west of Stockholm. Much of the Eketorp hoard consists of silver fragments, a common practice during and after the Viking period for use in monetary exchange.
When reconstructed to its original form, this deluxe brooch would be one of the largest and heaviest known from Viking Europe, signifying that its first owner held significant importance and status within Viking society. The Viking Shield Knot Ring pays homage to this rich history and craftsmanship, making it a meaningful and culturally significant piece of jewelry.
