In the early 11th century, a remarkable artistic evolution took place as the Mammen style gave way to the captivating Ringerike style. This transitional period coincided with a growing trend of erecting stone monuments, signifying a shift in cultural practices.

What distinguishes the Ringerike style from its Viking Age counterparts is its unique nomenclature. Unlike other styles that bear names tied to specific excavation sites, the Ringerike style derives its name from the picturesque region of Ringerike, nestled north of Oslo. This area boasted an abundant supply of sandstone, a prized material extensively employed in the creation of numerous intricate runestones that epitomize the essence of the Ringerike style.

The origin of the term 'Viking' can be traced back to the ancient Old Norse word 'Vikingr,' which vividly depicted these seafaring individuals as daring 'pirate raiders.' When the Norse people embarked on their ambitious voyages, they embraced the identity of 'going Viking,' fueled by an insatiable thirst for exploration and the allure of plunder. Their maritime vessels, often likened to majestic 'horses of the waves,' embodied not only incredible speed but also formidable power, serving as tangible symbols of their indomitable spirit. From the era spanning 850 to 1000 AD, the Vikings fearlessly ventured into numerous countries, leaving an indelible imprint on the lands they encountered. Their seafaring prowess spanned across diverse territories, from the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Italy to even reaching the shores of North Africa. Moreover, their audacity and navigational skills led them to the discovery of enigmatic realms, including Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland.

The Viking people earned widespread admiration for their remarkable shipbuilding craftsmanship, and their most iconic creation was undoubtedly the longship—a vessel that reigned supreme in terms of strength and adaptability. These awe-inspiring longships, measuring an average of 25-30 meters in length, provided ample space to accommodate a formidable crew of up to 60 men. In addition to the longships, the Vikings commonly relied on a range of other boat types, such as the Knarrs and Karves, which played pivotal roles in their maritime endeavors. Intriguingly, these Viking boats also assumed profound symbolic significance, serving as integral elements in solemn funeral rituals, signifying a safe passage to the afterlife.

Unquestionably, the Viking longboat emerged as the linchpin of the Vikings' extraordinary success in exploration. As time progressed, their seafaring expertise expanded, resulting in the development of various boat classes. The Vikings capitalized on the spoils of their initial raids, enhancing their shipbuilding techniques and paving the way for the construction of larger, more imposing vessels like the Skeid and the Busse. These magnificent ships enabled the Vikings to embark on epic journeys with larger cohorts, traversing vast oceans and conquering new horizons. In this way, they amassed invaluable treasures, solidifying their legendary status as intrepid seafarers and leaving an indelible legacy in the annals of maritime history.
