The Vegvisir, often called the runic compass or the Icelandic runes/Nordic compass, is an ancient symbol consisting of eight rune staves. Revered as a source of protection and guidance, it was believed to function as a compass used by the Vikings. The word "vegvisir" derives from Icelandic and signifies "wayfinder" or "sign post."
Although widely known as the Viking compass and associated with the daring expeditions undertaken by Vikings during the Viking Age, there exists a considerable debate regarding its origins.
The composition of the Vegvisir, consisting of eight Icelandic rune staves, is thought to represent both the cardinal directions (North, South, West, East) and the intercardinal directions (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast).
According to some theories, it is believed that by placing a nail precisely at the center of the Vegvisir, the Vikings could determine their bearings. The nail's shadow at different times of the day would serve as a directional guide to assist in navigating the treacherous seas.
In intriguing legends, it is mentioned that Icelandic ships would adorn themselves with the Vegvisir, or the Nordic compass, as a means to find their way back home safely.
Today, the Vegvisir continues to hold significance as a symbol of Icelandic culture. It is also embraced by followers of the Asatru faith, who adopt it as an emblem of spiritual guidance and a marker of personal identity.
