Viking axe from Mammen.
In 1868 a farmer began to dig into the mound Bjerringhøj at Mammen near Viborg. During this work he chanced upon an unusually richly-furnished grave, which has become known as the grave from Mammen. A magnate was buried in the grave during the winter of 970-71 AD. He was given an expensive costume, a ceremonial axe with inlaid silver decoration and a large wax candle.
On one side a tree motif can be seen. It may symbolise the Christian Tree of Life or the pagan tree Yggdrasil. On the other side is an animal figure – perhaps the rooster Gullinkambi (Old Norse “golden comb”) or the Phoenix. According to Norse mythology Gullinkambi sits on top of the tree Yggdrasil. Here it wakes the Viking warriors every morning and it will crow at the beginning of Ragnarok (the end of the world).

The Valknut, a symbol of profound significance woven into the tapestry of Norse culture, exudes an irresistible allure. Its origins lie in the fusion of two words: "valr," representing a fallen warrior, and "knut," symbolizing a knot or binding. Thus, the translation of "Valknut" results in the evocative phrase "The Knot of the Slain Warrior," encapsulating its essence with poetic resonance. Moreover, this emblem bears multiple names, including Odin's knot, Hrungnir's heart, and the Heart of Vala, further enhancing its mystique. Unsurprisingly, it holds an intimate connection with Odin, the supreme deity of Norse mythology, revered not only as the god of war but also as the harbinger of death.

Within the realm of archaeological discoveries, the Valknut frequently emerges alongside depictions of Odin, often accompanied by symbols of ravens or wolves, steadfast companions that embody his essence. This consistent visual association serves as a testament to the inseparable bond between this emblem and Odin.

The association of this symbol with the God of Death has bestowed upon the Valknut the revered status of being regarded as the symbol of the "Cult of the Dead." This attribution carries profound meaning, symbolizing the homage paid to courageous individuals who, in the prime of their lives, made noble sacrifices for the greater good of their clans.

The intricate design of the Valknut, characterized by an intricate interweaving pattern that can be traced by a single, unbroken line, bestows upon it a connection to the realm of mental manipulation. The Norse aptly named this mystical craft "Seidr," a form of witchcraft or magic that invoked both fear and reverence. Seidr was described as a means of altering observers' perceptions, conjuring illusions and visions that obscured reality. Notably, Odin himself wielded unparalleled mastery over this enigmatic art.

In the midst of battle, Odin was believed to wield mental shackles upon his adversaries, clouding their minds and instilling terror in their midst. Conversely, this power could be harnessed to grant Viking warriors clarity of thought and purpose amidst the chaotic theater of war. The Valknut, with its intricate design and ties to the art of mental trickery, serves as a potent symbol of Odin's prowess and the profound depths of Norse mythology.
